Ghanaian Actors And Actresses are taking over Movie roles(True or False)

I have never been a serious fan of African movies although i watch the blockbuster ones released by experience movie directors. In the last couple of months, i have seen myself getting glued to Ghanaian movies directed by Ghanaian directors and acted by Ghanaian actors and actresses.

Nollywood, the Nigerian movie industry is gradually being taken over by foreigners. And the infiltration is from one major source: Ghana.

Our investigations revealed that over the past seven months, Ghanaian actors, producers and directors have grabbed over 60 percent of the total market share. Although many are yet to comprehend the impact of this development, those who know, told Nigerian Entertainment Today over the weekend that it has very potent pros and cons.

A look at the movies featured on many Nollywood websites in the last six months, confirms that Ghanaian actresses, whether on Ghollywood or Nollywood productions, have dominated. Out of 184 movies featured on Nollytuned.com between April and August, 2013, Ghanaian actresses have led in at least 93 productions. Almost the same result is obtained if you check through iRokotv, ibakatv and Nollywood.com.

At retail stores, one will also find out that films with Ghanaian actresses are getting more patronage than the ones with Nigerian acts. Sarah Obiorah, a retail store owner at Olaniya Ademola street in Surulere, Lagos told us that a lot of her customers have become quite taken to the Ghanaian acts. ’Different customers have different preferences, but recently, a lot of them always ask if Yvonne Nelson or Jackie Appiah have new films out. Then some of the ladies always like to buy a John Dumelo or a Majid Michel movie’, Obiorah says.

Only a decade ago, Ghanaian movies hardly sold in Nigeria while Nigerian movies were blockbusters in Ghana. Today, the Ghanaian movie industry has come a long way parading some of the most beautiful actresses in Africa. At first-ever Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice AwardsAMVCA, Ghana’s Jackie Appiah took home the coveted award for the ‘Best Actress in a Lead Role’. Appiah again on September 14, was awarded ‘Best Actress’ at the Nollywood and African Film Critics Awards (NAFCA).

Ghana’s Jackie Appiah took home the coveted award for the ‘Best Actress in a Lead Role’ in the first ever Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards.
Yvonne Nelson and Nadia Buari have become household names in the Nigerian movie industry and have also become very much sought after by top Nigerian producers and directors. Juliet Ibrahim another rising star, is now a popular face at most Nigerian events.

Sam Onanuga, a Nollywood script writer confirms this emerging trend as he blames in on the reluctance of the established acts to partake in more films.  ‘It is not surprising that some of the Ghanaian actresses are becoming more popular and are getting more roles than our own actresses. They are more serious about this job and are ready to do as many movies as they can but their Nigerian counterparts are busy walking red carpets at events based on past glory’.

In the last few years, it seems that the established Nigerian actresses are more interested in chasing Hollywood pipe dreams than feature in indigenous movies. How many movies haveGenevieve, Omotola and Stephanie done lately? They are chasing after ‘waka-pass’ roles in Hollywood’, Onanuga told Nigerian Entertainment Today.

In the last one year, some of the established acts have reduced the number of films that they appear in to an average of three in a year, when on the other hand, their Ghanaian counterparts would have done an average of eight and sometimes produce too, like Yvonne Nelson has done with ‘Single and Married‘ and ‘House of Gold‘.

Yvonne Nelson and Majid Michel – two Ghanaian sweethearts who have found favour with Nigerian fans.
‘The movie industry works with different modalities‘, says Nnamdi Nwokeji, a member of the Lagos State chapter of the Film and Video Producers and Marketers Association of Nigeria (FVPMAN) ‘The consumers look out for the faces that appear on the cover of the CD before they buy. When you are not seen for a long time, they slowly begin to lose interest in you’.

Actresses of Ghanaian origin have somehow capitalized on this gap to win the hearts of movie lovers. Their industry has already identified them for the appeal they have in Nigeria and have used that as leverage to push their movies into the homes of movie loving Nigerians.

When we reached out to award winning Ghanaian film director, Frank Fiifi Gharbin, he no doubt expressed his satisfaction with the development. The 2010 Ghana Movie Awards Best Director said, ‘There shouldn’t be much fuss about Ghanaian actresses in Nollywood. For us it is a good development. It shows that our actors and our movies are beginning to gain prominence and are being accepted worldwide’.

In her opinion, award winning producer and CEO of Royal Arts Academy, Emem Isong thinks it does the industry more good than harm. ‘I totally disagree that Ghanaian actresses have taken over. Meanwhile, there’s nothing wrong with having a few actors from other African countries appearing in lead roles every now and then. It fosters unity and integration and that’s not a bad thing.’

CEO of Royal Arts Academy, Emem Isong thinks Ghana invasion does the industry more good than harm
Apparently, Nollywood is much renowned worldwide and so it is understandable for the average Ghanaian actress, after achieving much in her industry to aspire for recognition in Nollywood which is ranked as the second largest film industry in the world in terms of number of annual film productions.
Our investigations have shown that there is indeed a vacuum in the present Nollywood. Talented new actresses have been lacking in the last few years, many pundits say; with many opining the focus has been on building celebrity rather than capacity and skills.
If you ask an average Nigerian who his or her best actress is, they will still mention the likes of Omotola Jalade Ekeinde and Genevieve Nnaji, whereas these actresses hardly have new movies out.
More Nigerian actresses are looking beyond Nollywood to survive, as their take home pay is abysmal. So many are turning down roles and using their new found fame to focus on personal businesses. While many are surviving on brand endorsements, some now run fashion houses and a few unconventional businesses, not forgetting a few who have also tried to diversify into the music industry.
Whatever happened to the new comers you may ask? Is it that they lack the talent and the appeal?
Biola Adewale, a movie critic and consultant opines that Nollywood as an industry in recent years has failed to create an enabling environment for new talents to grow. ‘There’s so much nepotism in the industry. People don’t get role by credit anymore, how can real talents then be discovered? Now it seems like only those involved in scandals that seem to make the headlines. We know the likes of Nuella NjubuigboAnita Joseph and Susan Peters more for the scandals they have had than for movies they have acted’
Many at times, producers have been accused of having preference for pretty faces rather than talent in their choice of actresses. In most cases, these pretty faces are nothing but just pretty faces with little or no talent.
Reality shows like Amstel Malta Box Office (AMBO) and Next Movie Star were meant to discover the next Nollywood stars. So far, not many of the products of these competitions have made it to the mainstream..
Besides OC Ukeje who was named ‘Best Actor in a Lead Role’ at AMVCA 2013, other AMBO winners; Azizat Sadiq (2005) (who has now turned to music), Bhaira McWizu (2007), Wale Ojo(2008) and Ivie Okujaiye (2009) are still finding it hard to make a strong presence in the highly competitive industry.
Same can be said of the Next Movie Star winners and contestants who apart from enjoying the largesse that were doled out to them when they participated in the show and the attendant movie role, have not made any significant mark.
So what makes the Ghanaian actresses tick? Ghanaian producer, Paul Adjei tells us, ‘Ghanaian actresses are a lot sexier and talented as well. Apart from enjoying a good movie, the fans want to see their stars looking good and trendy. I guess that is some of the factors that are working for us Ghanaians.’
Are the Ghanaian over-celebrated more for their good looks than for their acting?
‘Ghanaian actresses seem to be over celebrated‘, says renowned movie producer, Zeb Ejiro. ‘Yes they have done a few movies, but that is not to say that they are more sought after than anUche Jombo or Rita Dominic. Unfortunately, there is nowhere for one to actually get an accurate record for who has done the most film or whose film has sold the most, so let’s just leave it at that.’
Star actress, Nse Ikpe Etim however refuses to see a difference in nationalities of actors. She says, ‘As an actor, I try not try not to define people by where they are from. If an actor is good, then he is good. If he is bad, then he is bad. If some producer prefers to cast a particular actor in his movie, it may be based on the actors ability to interpret the role and not because of where he or she comes from.’
For some time now, the industry has been plagued with internal wrangling. Intra and inter association bickering and tribal sentiments which has left the industry divided into Nollywood,Kannywood and the Association of Nigerian Theatre Arts Practitioners (ANTP) led  Yoruba movie industry-all following tribal etymology.
These intrigues have denied Nollywood the capability to function as one strong united front.
Nollywood director, Moses Inwang says his focus is on creating a world class movie regardless of the cast. ‘I think that whoever is playing a lead role in a movie shouldn’t matter. We have seen tons of horrible movies with a star studded cast. So if a Ghanaian gets the role, so be it. All I’m interested in is creating a world class movie.’
In many cases, viewers look out for much more from a movie than a good actor and a good story.‘When I watch a movie, I want my favourite actors to not only be able to act, but to also look great and that is why I would still love Genevieve, not because she’s the best actress in my book, but she certainly knows how to keep it trendy,’ says Temitayo  Oleh, an ardent movie lover.
Yvonne Nelson has transformed into a household name in Nollywood. When her movie ‘House of Gold’ premiered in Nigeria, it was definitely a huge success. The success was also replicated when fans troop to the cinemas in the following weeks to watch the movie.
Not only has Jackie Appiah been clinching many of the prestigious awards, she has starred in over 20 Nollywood productions in the last few years making her the most featured Ghanaian actress in Nolywood with movies like ‘Victim’ and ‘Passionate Liar‘.
Talented and sexy Nadia Buari has the highest fan base in Nigeria and that’s as much as what it takes to score a lead cast in much of Nollywood’s production. The 31year-old actress who is currently enjoying a controversial romance with Nigeria’s Jim Iyke, in the last few years has managed to maintain her place at the top.
Whether they be over-celebrated or not, one thing that cannot be in doubt is that these Ghanaian ladies have left a lasting impression in the hearts of Nigerians and for one reason or the other, movie lovers have come to love to see their faces on their TV screens.
‘Life is about competition and so are careers and other things. If you think you are the best in whatever you do, and then you sit back and relax without improving yourself, someday you will be surprised by how far ahead others may have overtaken  you, and then you will be the one playing catch up’, Adewale adds.

I Want To Date Nollywood Actor Yul Edochie-Ghana Actress Confessed!

Sure, it's jet age and anything can happen. For this actress who has a crush on Yul Edochie, it's nothing special but an expression of feeling.

Christabel Ekeh, a Ghana-based actress with Nigeria and Ghana ancestry has confessed her undying love for Yul Edochie, son of Nollywood super actor, Pete Edochie.

Although the light-skinned undergraduate of the University of Legon, Ghana has never met Yul in person, she said she's trying to control her crush for the handsome actor.

The delectable actress is also aspiring to work with him on set. Hear her, "I love to meet him on set. Naturally, I used to have a crush on him but actually I can now control myself (laughs). I will keep it till I meet him.

I haven’t met him in person and I am looking forward to that, I think if he sees me, he will want to have dinner with me (laughs) or have a date with me. Most definitely, I don’t even think I will have to ask him out because he will go on a date with me. At least, I am very beautiful.

I mean if you love someone in this age you don’t hide your feelings. We are in a fast world so no need of hiding your feelings; I am expressing my feelings towards him. I think he looks s*xier when he acts rough. When you love someone, everything he does, you will love.”

Heroes and Zeroes: Nadia Buari praises self

Nadia Buari
It is not every time one hears award winning Ghollywood actress, Nadia Buari who has been missing in action for some time now, sings praises of a movie she participated in. But this time around, the fair-skinned actress has done so without any remorse.

The screen goddess who played a lead act in the new flick, “ Heroes and Zeros”, described the film, directed by award-winning film maker, Niji Akanni, as “one of her best movies.”

In Nadia’s words, “ Heroes and Zeros” is about the best movie I have done in recent times. It was a great experience to be on set with the likes of Olu Jacobs, Bimbo Manuel, Tina Mba, Akin Lewis and many others. Everybody brought something to the table.” However, commending Nadia’s dexterity on set, the director said “Nadia Buari is a top Ghollywood actress who has won series of awards to show for her talent.

She really worked off her socks on set. Heroes and Zeros” which premiered in Ghana few weeks ago, is expected to hit the Nigerian cinemas next month. Judging by the storyline and the number of seasoned actors and actresses that featured in this one-of-a-kind flick, it is definitely a movie to look out for.

Segun Arize Mislead Ghanaians On the Ghana Movies Banned Saga

Segun Arinze Speaks On Marketers' Ban On Ghanaian Movies In Nigeria**Insults Nigerian Journalists Some hours after Newsmen posted an article about the ban of Ghanaian films in Nigeria, Segun Arinze called Mustapha Ayinde Inusah AKA Attractive Ayinde, one of Ghana’s top journalists, who also report for Newsmen, that he should enlighten Ghanaians not to take the words of the movie marketers in Nigeria serious.

You can read the interview Segun Arinze had with Attractive Ayinde on radio In Ghana and how ignorantly he spoke against Nigerian and African Journalists If it happens to be true that Segun Arinze made all these allegations, then newsmen will like to know; Between Segun Arize and movie marketers in Nigeria, who should be taken serious?

In a chit-chat with Segun Arinze, the former president of Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), denied any such thing happening. In his words, “we have created a very good relationship with Ghanaians and nothing will ever let us have a break up.

The story is absolutely bunkum!”, he said. “My only advice to Nigerian and African journalists is that they should be very careful with the way they spread false news since this statement they have released about Nigerian banning Ghanaian movies can cause state problems.

"I plead on behalf of Nigerians that Ghanaians shouldn’t take any statement of Ghana/Nigeria rivalry serious until they hear it from some of us”, he stated. He also added that they are busy working on Nollywood at 20 and believes in enterprise. So, banning Ghanaian movies in Nigeria will not profit them in any sense but rather limit their market scope.

Top Ghanaian Footballer Sponsored Yvonne Nelson’s Two Movies – (Any Hidden Motives)

Yvonne Nelson, who was then a hotcake and one of the favorites of many movie fans until she was lashed with a one year ban from acting by the Film Producers Association of Ghana-FIPAG, has so far produced two movies to her credit.

The first movie which was financed by one of Ghana’s top footballers couldn’t come out because it was stolen from the studio of Afra Marley, the Editor of the movie. The second one which is still in the creative acme is also said to have been financed by the same footballer.

The movie stars top musicians like, Efya, sexy rapper It’s Tiffany, Chris Attoh, Nadia Buari, Eddie Watson, Kofi Adjorlolo, Anita Erskine and new face Kweku Elliot. Although newsmen have not seen the full movie yet, some few minutes teaser we had the privilege of watching did not have any extra ordinary theme or storyline.

It’s the normal banal movies we watch and criticize all the time but, as the saying goes,“when the toad dies we all get to know its full length so let’s give her the benefit of the doubt and just keep our fingers crossed till it’s out”.

Our source closer to the football in question revealed that, the footballer is not really looking at making any profit from sponsoring the movie but rather, to resuscitate Yvonne Nelson’s acting career that appears to be foundering.

The question we at todaysgist are asking is; will a young, moneyed, nice looking and internationally acclaimed footballer sponsor a yummy lady like Yvonne Nelson with over $200,000 without any “hidden motives”? Talk of “hidden motives”, I guess you know what am talking about. There’s no free lunch in today’s world. What do you think?

I DRINK GARRI, NADIA BUARI CORRECTS D’BANJ

If you have listened to “Oliver Twist” by Afro hip-hop star D’banj then you must be familiar with this line “I like Nadia Buari but she no dey drink garri”. But in an interview Nadia Buari granted Golden Icons TV host Emma Emerson she said she drinks garri.

When Emma Emerson asked her if she drinks garri, Nadia said “I think you are like the zillionth person that has asked me this question.

First of all I am African, so I definitely drink garri, I mean but I think when I listen to that track I really liked it, I think either it probably meant more than what you heard or he just wanted to rhyme like Buari and garri, either one of them I do drink garri”

Van Vicker: I have no beef against Majid

Popular Ghanaian actor Van Vicker has for the first time refuted speculations of a rift with AMAA 2012 Best Actor, Majid Michel. Van Vicker told Hitz FM he does not have any problem with actor Majid Michel or anyone in the movie industry. There have speculations of bad blood between the two popular screen faces. The suspicions are believed to have been engendered by two developments that also happened just about the same time.

Van Vicker was falsely reported to have been arrested by the police in Nigeria on suspicion he was importing unlicensed guns. It turned out the story was not true, and he debunked that in an exclusive interview with Hitz FM. Just about the time, Majid won Best Actor at the Africa Movie Academy Awards, however, the feat did not receive much media blitz as the Vicker arrest story took the limelight.

According to Vicker, he personally acknowledged and congratulated Majid for winning the award, a situation he says would not have been possible if there was indeed a rift between them. “Honestly if we were on bad terms, I wouldn't want to acknowledge him. I am not sure I would even want to mention that he won the best actor at the awards.

We are friends, we are on good terms and I don't have any beef with Majid or anyone in the movie industry.” Van Vicker said he and Majid are players in the same industry who are striving to be the best they could. He therefore does not see himself trying to bring anybody down. “I think my energy is positive into making sure I get what I want, it doesn't mean I will stand up and bring someone else down.

He can excel in his own area and so can I. He has his weaknesses and I have mine, he has his strengths and I have mine as well. We ask for God's blessings so we move forward,” he said. Van Vicker recently returned from Malawi after a series of projects in that country. He plans a US tour in two weeks to premier his movie.

Nollywood/Ghollywood: Relationship Gone Sour?

Jackie Appiah, Van Vicker, Nadia Buari,Majid Mikel; these names come easily to mind as they have featured in many Nigerian home videos for years, holding their own alongside the likes of Nigeria’s Desmond Elliot, Genevieve Nnaji, Ini Edo and Jim Iyke, among others. They are Ghanaian actors, who have maintained a steady presence in the Nigerian film industry, winning the admiration of millions of Nollywood fans both at home and abroad.

To opposing poles of opinion, their presence has either been welcomed or has been kicked against. From the “patriotic” Nigerians protesting the presence of actors of another nationality infiltrating their beloved Nollywood, to the free thinkers, who welcomed change in whatever form, to those who remain largely unfazed, the appearance of Ghanaians has done one thing; it has created a need to compare both countries’ movie industries to gauge which one is the would-be host and which one is the parasite.

Once a seemingly cordial and mutually beneficial relationship, the collaboration between the Ghanaian and Nigerian movie industries may have turned sour with news of levies and restrictions swirling over the industry and throwing those concerned into a frenzy. Worthy of its own Nollywood/Ghollywood production, the brewing blow out between the industries has taken on proportions of classical family feuds with each side threatening attacks double that of their counterparts. One may decide to look at the hows and whys the making and breaking of the Nollywood/Ghollywood alliance came into being.

Varying accounts exist of how the association between the Nigerian and Ghanaian movie industries began, while some say that Ghanaians have been involved in Nigerian movie productions since inception of Nollywood, others believe that their presence is a recent development. However, some agreed on the fact that the Nigerian movie industry served as a launching pad for its Ghanaian counterpart. This was achieved through the appearance of Ghanaian faces in Nollywood productions with the popularity of the industry serving as a vehicle which launched them into stardom.

Internationally-acclaimed and highly-sought after all over the world, the reach and popularity of Nollywood need not be contested: a booming enterprise, Nollywood attracts stakeholders from all over wishing to be part of the excitement. Therefore, Ghana’s decision to buy into the Nigerian movie industry was a smart move and one, which, successfully launched the careers of their foremost actors and actresses. Largely unsatisfied with appearances in Nigerian productions, the Ghanaians borrowed a leaf from their host industry and set up their own Ghollywood.

To create a buzz around it, the Ghanaians started off featuring popular Nigerian actors and actresses in their productions. Seemingly a working relationship, traces that the collaboration has started going sour started surfacing when the authorities of the Ghanaian movie industry issued a directive stating that no Nigerian actors would be allowed to work on any of their movies unless they pay a fee of one thousand dollars. In response, their Nigerian counterparts quickly placed their fee for Ghanaians acting in Nigerian productions to two thousand dollars.

Highly dramatic and a bit unnecessary, it would be easy to egoistically blame the other party; however, both parties have had an equal negative role in how badly the relationship has fared. Citing the overbearing presence of Nigerians in their productions, the Ghanaian movie authorities believe that the Nollywood stars are hampering the growth of their talents.

So, in order to curtail this; they introduced the measure, which has understandably thrown the Nigerian players into a frenzy. The Nigerian side on the other hand has embraced the Ghanaian movie industries as a new and interesting change from Nollywood, therefore going to act there became the latest fad with numerous actors and actresses crossing the borders to show off their skills to the Ghanaian audience.

Now to dissect; given that the Nigerian movie industry is a self-made, half-baked albeit successful, and that the name Nollywood is known all over the world and avidly watched by Africans of all races, and also that Ghanaians form about the largest population of consumers of Nollywood productions, it would only be natural that our actors, producers and other stakeholders to think that whatever turf they felt like invading was theirs for the taking.

Now for the Ghanaians, they may have shown a huge dept of ingratitude to the assistance the Nigerian movie industry gave them, though one understands that their movie industry is a business and needs to be run as such, but it would only show courtesy for them to be as accommodating as they could be.

Though, reactions from Nigerians to the issues either lie between outrage or acceptance, one thing is for sure that the Ghanaian movie industry is gearing up to becoming a competition for Nollywood, the die-hard Nollywood fans can shout as much as they want, but the truth is that a few years and a few hundred movies down the line, Ghollywood could be on the same level as Nollywood, if not better.

Ghanaians also should realise that behaviour like that can result in extreme odds; they may be competitive and gearing for a take-over, but you do not bite the finger that fed you. Apart from Ghana, Nigeria is going in to collaborations with other African nations like Liberia, so it may not be a deliberate effort at world domination but just a widening of horizons and a display of cultural acceptance. Conclusively, Nollywood authorities should make their decisions with a measure of moderation and look before they leap.

HUSBAND SNATCHING SAGA: NADIA BUARI SPOTTED WITH HER NIGERIA LOVER,JOSEPH TOMOWU

The last may not have been heard about the love affair between Ghanaian star actress,Nadia Buari and Delta State big boy politician and oil and gas turk,Joseph Tomowu.

The duo seemed to have moved their relationship to the next level.

Recall that we brought a report to you few weeks back about husband snatching saga allegedly involving Nadia and ex-Miss Delta Soap Queen,Steph-Nora Anusionwu.

Nadia, according to the gist was alleged to have snatched Steph’s husband,Joseph Tomowu.

According to the gist,Nadia had been having an illicit affair with the man who is legally married to Steph-Nora.As the gist had it,Nora lives in London with her husband,Tomowu and their three kids, but Tomowu’s business in Oil and Gas and politics, had made him to stay more in Nigeria recently.

When in Nigeria, the Big Boy shuttles between Asaba in Delta State and Lagos. He was said to have met Nadia in Asaba during the shooting of a film and one thing led to another.
