Why I Can’t Sacrifice My Acting Career For Marriage –Actress Nse Ikpe

A few years back, Nollywood actress, Nse Ikpe-Etim, took a break from acting, to work in the banking sector. Ikpe-Etim, who is a professional chef, later delved into the fashion industry before she made a comeback in Emem Isong’s hit movie, Reloaded.

But nowadays it takes an intelligent script and a thorough filmmaker to entice her away from her home and family, as well her favourite place, the kitchen.

And the latest film script to have engrossed the slender role interpreter is the Rita Dominic/ Mildred Okwo’s satirical comedy flick, The Meeting, in which she plays, Bolarinwa, the high-flying girlfriend of a serving federal minister.

Although she appears in just a few scenes in the film, the actress is quick to correct anyone who thinks that it was an irrelevant role. “It was not a minor role, I beg to differ because one scene can make or mar a movie and one scene can give you an Oscar or AMAA. So I like to say that every role is increasingly important as long as you are an actor. You can have guest appearances, cameos, lead and supporting roles. My role was a cameo," she says.

As she speaks glowingly about her role in the movie which premieres today, Ikpe-Etim almost immediately switches into character and then in a smattering of Yoruba language saying, “Mo need cash gan just like Bolarinwa, my taste is very high,” bursting into a fit of laughter.

It then becomes almost impossible to decipher when she is actually being serious with the responses and when it is just a tease. But this is quite understandable for the actress who spent her formative years in primary and secondary schools in Jos, Kaduna and Ilorin as she loves to have a good laugh.

The societal pressure on Nollywood spinsters keeps mounting by the day and has been attributed as the reason behind the scandals and divorce tales trailing a number of stars. While there may be a tendency for some persons to take her jovial nature for granted, Ikpe-Etim says she does not take lightly issues that pertain to her still being single having come this far in her career and so naturally puts up a defence.

“The thing is I have stated my thoughts on marriage. It is a good thing but it has to be kept holy. Who says I am being delayed? I do not subscribe to divorce because I am so catholic and I was brought up that way. I am not in a relationship because I won’t have time to make other people happy and make ‘him’ happy. I have chosen who I want to make happy, my fans.

"It’s very early in my career and I can’t compromise because I can’t feed him. I don’t do trial and error, every man that has been in my life has been for a reason and season and I am sure they are all fine. It is something that you do not out of societal pressure, not because your parents want you to do it but because you are ready and you have found the one person that you cannot dare to live without,” she explains.

Just like many other thespians who have found solace in Nollywood, Ikpe-Etim, who studied Theatre- Arts at the University of Calabar, says she misses the adrenalin rush that comes with being on stage.

“My background in theatre has helped in a way because you know what you want. More so theatre does not teach you acting for film. Acting for film, is a different thing from being on stage. They are two different ball games. You have to be lucky that the camera loves you and whatever it is, you can elicit any sort of feelings from your viewers. Theatre is exhilarating. It is almost orgasmic.”

I befriended animals when I was growing up because my parents were too busy

My hairstyle

I don’t wear dreadlocks, it is just my natural hair that you are seeing. I twist it and loose it when I choose to. I do not fix a weave-on becaiuse it is artifical. I carry my hair most of the time, except when I have to attach something else to it. If I am playing a role in a home video film, I wear another hairstyle. I am an easy-going person, though I am inclined to lose my temper sometimes. My bark is worse than my bite and I am a simple person.

Life after graduation

After graduating from the University of Calabar, I worked with a radio station and a television station. I did a bit of film acting before getting a job in a bank.

Why I quit banking

I don’t think I remember the year I quit banking. But when I decided it was not longer what I wanted to do I had to leave. I was doing the same thing everyday. I was not passionate about it and I think if you want to earn a living, you should be passionate about what you do.

How I became an actress

A movie producer, Emem Isong, brought a script to me and asked me to read it. Initially I wasn’t enthusiastic about it, but she insisted and I eventually did it. I decided to start a career as an actress after I took part in the movie titled, Guilty Pleasures. That was my turning point. I owe this to movie fans. They made me who I am today.

My parents’ reaction

When I decided to be an actress, I was old enough to choose for myself. But my mother only hoped it would work. Now she is my greatest fan. When I say I was rebellious, I mean that I was assertive as a child. I knew what you wanted and went for it. That is how I was brought up: to know what I want. My mum did not think it was right. So I left acting and went into banking. When I got out, I said to her: now that I have done your wish, let me do mine.

Most challenging movie

Honestly I haven’t found any movie that I’d describe as most challenging for me. Also, no role has been insurmountable to me.

Nollywood

I am an ardent fan of Nollywood. I think it is still developing. We are trying our best to keep it alive, considering the fact that we work under difficult conditions. We hope it will get better some day.

Challenges facing Nollywood

The greatest challenge is, perhaps, the environment. There are no good roads and there is irregular power supply. Basically, we are suffering in order to put smiles on the faces of the people. In terms of infrastructure, I think we are doing our best, too. We are struggling to succeed in spite of the odds.

Why I lived with my godmother

Since my parents were very busy when I was much younger, I had to live with my godmother. My mother was still in school and my father had a busy work schedule at the time. But my godmother was not too busy for me. We were quite close. Apart from the neighbour’s son who was my friend, the other friends I had were animals. That was how I grew up. I never felt lonely all that while.

Growing up in the North

I grew up in the North. Life was beautiful then. Kaduna had lovely hotels where we used to go and swim. Zaria was peaceful and the residents were friendly. Jos had the best yoghurt in the country at that time. As a child, I loved to take yoghurt. Today, I doubt if you could find any that is as tasteful as what we used to buy in those days. Now you have to go all the way to a big store to buy bread. And then, everything in the North just changed.

The crisis in the North

It is just heart breaking. I think Nigeria is passing through a phase. Some people have said that for the land to be cleansed, blood will have to be shed. I think that is selfish. I do not want my blood to be shed. This is not the way to solve problems. It is painful that we resort to violence to get things done in this country. I hope that the problems in the North will be solved soon.

My most embarrassing moment

My most embarrassing moment is the day fell off an airplane. I did not remove my glasses and everything went misty. I fell down when I was descending the staircase. The worst part was that I had to struggle to get up on my feet.

My relationships

I am not involved in a relationship. I don’t think that everybody needs a companion. Lonely people ought to keep themselves occupied with work or they would be bored to death. When I don’t have any work to do, I read books to keep my mind busy. If I don’t have any book to read, I watch a movie or get busy in the kitchen.

"I Have No Plans For Marriage" - Nse Ikpe- Etim

It is assumed that when a lady is not married, the possibility of keeping dates with men with fat wallets is more than 50 per cent. Especially if she is a celebrity and wants to maintain that high standard of life.

If she is beautiful, that increases her number of dates more so, if none of the men in her life is ready to walk her down the aisle. At least, she would enjoy their expensive gifts, money and favour.

But this is not the case with talented and down-to-earth actress, Nse Ikpe- Etim.

The talented thespian seems to have joined long list of female celebrities that are scared of getting married because of the high rate of divorce in the showbiz industry.

In a recent interview, the beautiful and s*xy actress drops bombshell. She says she’s not ready for relationship talk less of marriage.

I'm not in a relationship.

I'm not one of those that think life starts and ends at the altar. I have no plans for marriage. Is that why you were born? I was born to affect lives positively or negatively, the part I chose might include marriage and it might not. When we get that straight, we will accept everybody.

When asked, how do you deal with scandals;she said They are what they are called; scandals. And I don't have to deal with them. A rumour is a rumour, a scandal is a scandal and it doesn't affect me. And I don't care about it as long as someone hasn't died from it.
