Hip Hop Guys Force Lagbaja To Remove Mask

For a while now, life with Lagbaja, the masked man has been so terrible. The advent of hip-hop in Nigeria actually led to his musical misfortune. When he started out, not many people were disposed to his kind of song then but due to the fact that the competition was not stiff, Lagbaja was reigning supreme until hip hop came him through the Remedies etc.

 Despite all kinds of stunts displayed by him in his videos etc, his relevance was dropping by the day as the global acceptability of hip hop forced him to leave for America, yet it didn't get it right unlike before and life, we learnt, became so unbearable for him. Today, Lagbaja, the Afro-beat singer, song writer, instrumentalist that was been inspiring minds with his powerful style of music since 1993 “finally reveals the face behind the mask.” 

 According to Lagbaja, his mask is used as an icon of man’s facelessness. Lagbaja is a Yoruba word that means “nobody in particular”. It depicts the anonymity of the so-called “common man”. The mask and the name symbolize the faceless, the voiceless in the society, particularly in Africa.

 He is also known as “Omo baba mu’ko mu’ko” Often his music is purely instrumental- an interplay between traditional Yoruba percussion, drums, chants, western instruments, and especially the saxophone. 

 When there are lyrics, they are primarily sung in Yoruba, English or a blend of the two as is colloquially spoken in Yoruba cities. Many of his songs dwell on serious social issues, while others simply entertain. If truly this is “Omo baba mu’ko mu’ko”

Lagbaja Tackles Nigeria’s Corrupt Leaders

The masked man believes we all are aware of the debilitating issues confronting us as a nation. It is easy to point accusing fingers at others as the cause of our woes. It is always other people's fault. Never myself. 

That is our prevalent attitude. (Listen to the Song below) The leaders are our easiest targets. But these leaders emerge from amongst us. They are reflective of the true nature of our society.

 It is quite apparent that in some way, everyone is contributing to the pervasive rot. For us to emerge from the ills threatening to submerge us as a nation, we need to be truthful to ourselves and honestly examine our roles.

MUSICIAN LAGBAJA TALKS TOUGH: CALLS D'BANJ'S MANAGER,SUNDAY ARE A SCAM

Lagbaja has finally opened up in response to interviews purportedly granted by Sunday Are.In the interviews,he claims and insinuates,amongst other things,to have made Lagbaja,created Lagbaja,managed Lagbaja,been the brain behind Lagbaja,set up Lagbaja’s band,took Lagbaja to Sony Music,pushed Lagbaja into the 3 Million Naira class,compelled Lagbaja to wear the mask etc.

He also made all sorts of claims about Majek,Asa,Jazzville,King Sunny Ade etc.

In a recent press release,Lagbaja said I feel a little shame that I would sink as low as to respond to the megalomaniac rant of Sunday Are.I typically would never respond to such,for I live by a different code.For one thing,issues like this are too mundane and vain to waste the precious gift of time on.

However,this is the second time in a few months that someone would point my attention to his interviews where he concocts all kinds of absurb stories and insinuations about his role in “making” Lagbaja.Brazenly repeating these absolute lies makes me believe that he might have quite a sinister agenda.My best guess is that he is out to scam naïve and unsuspecting young artistes with his fraudulent claims of a glorious influential past.

Or,maybe he wishes to scam some expatriate “mugu” or swindle on an international scale.This is a calculated image laundering campaign.People…Beware! These are probably the sort of absolute lies that he has used to swindle his way into the affairs of people he has been working with and controlling in recent times.

It is likely that he has successfully fooled them into believing his “very important” past and is now basking in the glory and proceeds he has reaped from his deceit.It is not difficult to see how some half truths,a little smooth talk,spiced with some circumstantial tales,backed with some imaginative name dropping have put him in manipulative control of his protégés.

His campaign is completely fraudulent.

The simple truth is that,he was only a sound engineering apprentice for live concerts with Lagbaja’s band.Nothing more.

He makes similar outlandish claims about several others.I hope they would speak up if his stories about his relationships with them are untrue.If we all ignore him,keeping a dignified silence,he would eventually succeed in deceiving the general public with his well orchestrated fabrications.

Let me simply state unequivocally that every single claim that Sunday Are made in these articles about his role with Lagbaja,is an absolute lie.Every single one.Never happened.Nauseating.If he could make up such stories about his time with Lagabja,my suspicion is that his references to Majek,Asa,Muyiwa,King Sunny Ade etc.are also false twisted stories.

I would love to hear what they have to say about his tales and I hope someone would actually take the time to unearth the truth by interviewing them.

Who knows,maybe he “made” them as he insinuates,but as for Lagbaja…his imagination is laughable!

As has been happening over the years,by the grace of God,I continue to be blessed in receiving valuable advice,help,support,guidance etc.in many forms from all manner of people.

Sunday Are has never been one of them.He should wake up from his delirious wishful thinking and delusions of grandeur.

Sunday!”Big Man”,it is time to wake up from your troubled stupor.Quit fantasizing about a past that never happened.A glorious future might still be possible but only if you would stop living on deceit.Maga fit pay small…but that’s only for a while…e no dey last!

I made Lagbaja Who He His Today

Masked musician, Bisade ‘Lagbaja’ Ologunde, is unpretentiously furious at the moment. He is spitting into the air and receiving it with measured cadence because of a sustained and reinforced claim by artistes manager of Mo’Hits, Sunday Are, that he created the concept of the mask for Lagbaja. 

In an interview with Lagos-based evening paper, PM News, last November, with the headline, “I put mask on Lagbaja’s face,” Are says, “I called Lagbaja and told him he had to start wearing the mask. 

Although it was not easy because he was not happy about the suggestion initially, he had to agree with me as a man who knows where he was coming from - the background, family and school days, among other things. 

He said he had friends working in the bank as managing directors and others and that I should not make him look stupid before them. But I thank God and Lagbaja too, because he believed in me….I pushed Lagbaja into the N3 million Naira class and that’s what I do for all my artistes.”

Even though his attention was drawn to the publication, Lagbaja says he did not react thinking such would not happen again. But he confesses to have been shocked out of his wit when, in a national newspaper last weekend, Are claims once again, “We had a concept which was to have a faceless human being that can sing, play the instrument and dance. 

Initially, we were using one of our friends, Kunle Ojomo. And at a time, we used different persons to wear the mask. But one day, I told Lagbaja that he needed to start wearing the mask. When I told him, he was angry at the beginning. I told him the concept was most suitable for one who plays the instrument and who can also dance. 

He could sing, dance and play the instrument. But after three months of trying out the mask, he got used to it and now Lagbaja has come to stay. But it took my iron hand to achieve that and I thank God.” There were other claims ranging from how he helped songstress, Asa, withering reggae star, Majek Fashek, and Mo’Hits helmed by Don Jazzy and D’banj, among others, to find their musical bearing. 

Early Wednesday morning, however Lagbaja called E-Punch to discountenance Are’s claims that he created, managed, set up Lagbaja’s band, took him to Sony Music and compelled him to wear the mask. He later sent a strongly-worded treatise to E-Punch, which he titled ‘Beware of Sunday Are’s delusions of grandeur’ to underscore his position.
