In February 2010 she was left heartbroken after the collapse of her relationship with ex-husband Ashley Cole.
But despite calling time on their three-and-a-half year marriage, in the public eye Cheryl Cole appeared to be coping well.
However the 29-year-old singer has revealed in her autobiography, entitled Chery: My Story, that following her split from the England footballer that she believes she suffered a 'nervous breakdown'.
According to the Daily Star Sunday, Cheryl admits that she struggled to really get into her third series on the The X Factor, which saw her act Rebecca Ferguson place second, and subsequently opted to be alone on Christmas Day.
In the candid book the Girls Aloud star wrote: 'I just wanted to get out of the marriage and out of the house but as the day of the move got close I became more and more emotional.
'I think I was actually going through a nervous breakdown.'
Cheryl also opened up about how she lied to her family and friends by telling them all that she was doing well when in fact she was terribly unhappy.
The Promise This singer continued: 'Really I wanted to say "Help me, I can't live like this any more. I'm miserable as hell.'
