Nigerian Celebrities Unite For Late Singer Kefee; Forms Burial Committee

I still find it hard to believe that our beloved Kefee is no more, death can be so cruel and it's no respecter of persons.

Members of the Nigerian entertainment industry, believed to be way over 100, gathered yesterday, Monday, June 23rd, in Lagos to plan the  proper means of giving the late singer, Kefee, a befitting burial.

Some of the faces present were; Nikki Laoye, Tosin Martins, Emem Ema, Tee-Y Mix, DJ Gosporella, Wamilele, Princess, , Perry Martins, Praise Machine, Mudi, Righteousman, Nene Soul Diva, Victor Gospogroove, Gordons and representatives from Kefee’s family.

Popular singer, Sammie Okposo, noted that the death of Kefee has affected the Nigerian entertainment industry and the world over and not just the Gospel music community in Nigeria.

"Kefee was a major contributor to the development of entertainment in Nigeria and the industry will be there for her even in death. We are going to bury her as a queen and it would be nice for us to work together to make her burial a grand affair. It would also be nice to use this opportunity to get our acts together as Gospel artists and entertainers in general because that is what Kefee would love,’’ he said.

Also speaking, Tosin Martins, suggested that activities in honour of Kefee should extend beyond the immediate burial plans to include a more robust an annual memorial symposium and other events which promote the interests and passion of Kefee for posterity’s sake.

A committee called the ‘Kefee Memorial Committee’ (KMC) was thus constituted to plan the various events which would hold in Lagos and Sapele, the hometown of the late singer.

The members of the committee are: Sammie Okposo, Nikki Laoye, Commorade Rex Anighoro, Momodu Inu Noah, Tosin Martins, Anny Ibrahim, Joan Paul, Aity Dennis-Inyang, Emem Ema, Gbenga Akintokun, Tee-Y Mix, Tim Tehilla, DJ Gosporella, Praise Machine, Victor Gospogroove, Princess, Perry Martins, DJ Direal and journalist, Chilee Agunanna, who was Kefee’s publicist
The committee would plan towards befitting burial events in Lagos and Sapele and some of the proposed activities were a symposium and Service of Songs tagged ‘An Evening With Kefee’ in Lagos.

There would also be a documentary of the singer’s life and times; performances of her songs by other artists; Kefee memorial merchandise and a tribute concert in Sapele.
Kefee’s husband, Teddy Don-Momoh, monitored the proceedings of the meeting from the U.S. where he is preparing to fly home the body of his wife.

He once again pleaded for the privacy of the family to be respected in these trying times.
He observed that some of the stories written about Kefee since her death were mostly untrue and cited the reports of a pregnancy which didn’t exist and the story that her body had been flown home as very insensitive and mischievous.

He also stressed that some reports that claimed that he was stranded in the U.S. and soliciting for financial help through a bank account were lies.

Teddy said that, customarily, he would have to return home to Nigeria first, to be on ground to receive the body of his wife which would then follow afterwards.

He said he was finalising the required paperwork before Kefee’s body could be flown from the U.S. to Nigeria and once those were done, more details of the burial plans would be released.
Teddy said that Kefee’s family had requested that she be buried in their hometown, Okpara-Inland, Ethiope East local government, with a celebratory service in Sapele afterwards and that he was comfortable with that.

Those, according to him, were the only definite arrangements for his wife’s burial so far.
Kefee whose real name was Irikefe Don-Momoh (nee Obareki) was a well-liked Pop-Gospel artist who had been active in the entertainment industry for the past ten years. She was born on Feb. 5, 1980 in Sapele, Delta State and was known as the Branama Queen, in reference to her debut hit track and album, ‘Branama’. She also scored a hit with the track, ‘Kokoroko’, featuring Timaya and had four albums to her credit— ‘Branama’ (2003), ‘Branama 2’ (2005), ‘A Piece of Me’ (2009) and ‘Chorus Leader’ in 2013.

A Condolence Register has been opened for the singer at her restaurant, Branama Kitchen, at 11 Ajose Str., Mende, Maryland, Lagos.

How I Predicted Keefe’s Death - Popular Singer, Ara, Claims

According to Vanguard, Nigerian female talking drummer, Ara, who is a friend to late Kefee, says she had a dream concerning Kefee’s death and that she had called the late singer to warn her and adviced her to pray hard to avert it.

In her words:
''I want to use this forum to appeal to my colleagues in the music industry. Less than two years ago, I had a dream about Keffee and immediately called her and narrated it to her, I also appealed to her not to make a joke of it….the rest is history.

Early this year, I had a dream and contacted Efe of NOW music as he’s the only one I could call and told him to please organise a forum for all musicians to assemble and pray against death amongst us (please confirm from Efe). It’s sad we had to lose my girlfriend, sister and colleague…so sad. When a revelation comes like that, it means there is a way out. Once again, we need to come together as a body under one roof to rebuke and pray about this revelation I had early this year. Yes, we all have different sources of prayer but this is a prayer we all must observe together. I beg you all. I didn’t want to speak out but I have no choice than to.''

‘I still can’t believe she’s gone’, Kefee’s ex-husband, Alec Godwin mourns

It's really unbelievable that Kefee is dead. She reportedly passed away on Thursday, June 12, 2014 after 15 days in a coma. The late singer’s ex-husband Alec Godwin says he’s yet to come to terms with her death. ‘Is there any concrete confirmation? I’m still hoping it’s not true’, Godwin told our correspondent over the phone; hours after the news of her death broke on social media.

Alec’s marriage to Kefee collapsed in 2008. The music producer reminisced on the times they worked together, creating her debut album ‘Branama’ and the follow up ‘Branama 2’ ‘It was a pleasure working with her, it was all so natural. I won’t say I discovered her, I’ll rather say we discovered ourselves because she inspired me to set up my record label ‘Alec’s Music’, Godwin said. ‘I believed so much in her even after we split. She was a talented vocalist‘, he added.

Alec and Kefee met in 1999 at a local church in Warri, and years later Alec signed Kefee to his record label, which housed other acts like his sister Estee and Edo-born singer Rhymzo. The couple ended their three-year marriage in 2008 after protracted marital problems.

Pregnant Singer, Kefee, Reportedly Out Of Coma

Although, it hasn't been announced by the singer's publicist, but sources close to the 'kokoroko' singer, says she is awake and asking after her family members and friends.

The Sapele born gospel singer had collapsed on a flight going to Chicago, forcing the plane to make an emergency landing.

She was rushed to the hospital where and has been in coma for weeks now.
On June 4, Kefee's family officially confirmed the news that she was in coma, with her husband begging Nigerians to pray for his wife.

According to report, Kefee is 6-months pregnant and was diagnosed with pre-eclampsia, i.e. pregnancy induced high blood pressure.

A Nigerian medic Dr Adeyefa, however revealed that Kefee's life could be in serious danger, saying if the foetus had been 9 months, it could have been removed, which would save both lives, of the mother and the baby. Source

Oh No!!! : Pregnant Singer Kefee Diagnosed With Pre-Eclampsia, Needs A Miracle To Survive - Doctors Say

The Tribune reports that, the chances of Kefee getting out of coma is slim as her situation not only requires prayers for survival, but also a miracle as the musician has been diagnosed as having pre-eclampsia – pregnancy induced high blood pressure.

Six-month pregnant Kefee had embarked on a 14-hour flight to Chicago for an event but went into coma, forcing the plane to land in Los Angeles so that she could be urgently attended to.

A source told Tribune during a phone conversation that:
“Kefee surely did not know that she had a high blood pressure before she embarked on
the long trip and suddenly went into coma in the air. That she is pregnant has made her situation dicey, so she will need a miracle to survive, a doctor told me”.

Meanwhile, a medical doctor in Nigeria, Dr Adeyefa, shedding more light on Kefee’s condition, said:
“Kefee is in a precarious situation because of the six months pregnancy. If the foetus had been nine months, the doctors would have removed the baby and saved the mother and child. As it is now, not only will the baby not survive because the carrier is in coma, Kefee may also lose her life from further complications. The chances of the mother surviving is narrow, while the kid has a narrower chance. I urge Nigerians to pray for her for a miracle because that is what she really needs,” he added. Source

''So Called Man Of God, (COZA Pastor Biodun) Rejected Me Because Of A Scandal'' - Singer Reveals

Gospel singer Kefee, in a chat with Encomium Magazine while trying to defend her Kokoroko song with secular singer Tamara, told this interesting story of her experience with now happily married Ese Walter's COZA pastor, Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo.  Please read:

You started out as a traditional gospel singer, along the line your deviated. Would we say you re-branded?

If you have my album or albums, you would know that I am doing same kind of music, but different genres. For instance, the kind of songs in Branama 1 is the same with other songs, but with improved production and vocals.

Some people were not happy because you featured Timaya in Kokoroko and he’s a secular singer. How would you react to that?

Before I react to that question, let me tell you this short true story. In 2008, I was invited to perform at a church (name withheld) in Abuja for the second time. The publicity for the show was massive, they had distributed invitation card to guests, people were even calling to confirm if I was going to perform. In fact, I got copies of the flyers weeks before the show.

I was getting ready to go to the airport when I got a call from the pastor’s P.A, asking if I had seen a certain newspaper’s story about me. I said yes, it was a scandal.

And he said they don’t want to have anything to do with me because of that scandal. Besides, he added that they have top government officials who worship in their church, and all sort.

I said ok, but the so-called senior pastor, who called me initially to plead with me to accept a certain amount because it was a new church couldn’t call me anymore, he had to send his P.A to tell me that. He didn’t care what happened to me, if it was true what said about me by an angry, bitter man.

I felt really low not because I didn’t do the show but because they cared less what happened to me, because that would have been the end of my career.

Now, I called Timaya. We met at a studio somewhere in Festac town, and Timaya asked me about the same scandal. And he told me what I expected a man of God would’ve told me. I remember, he said to me:

“Don’t worry, if your hands are clean, you will see God turn things around for you. God will help you, my sister.”

I say this in all sobriety, after which we recorded Kokoroko. When Kokoroko came out and Timi (Dakolo) listened to it, he said “Kefee, you dey make me like God in a different way.”

Now, you tell me, who acted like a good human? Who would have ever thought that the so-called man of God, who now has his share of scandal and is still planning a robust reply would act that weird? So, when I heard people talking about me featuring Timaya, it sounded funny. God can use anything, anybody.

Music is an art that transcends all. Timaya was good for that song and he delivered, that’s what matters to me.

I don’t judge people. If he was a doctor, you won’t say he shouldn’t treat you because he isn’t a Christian. It won’t matter then. All you would want is have him do his job and that was what he did. He did a good job on that song you can’t deny that. And to me, that’s what counts.

Many people have criticized you because of your way of dressing, saying that it is not Christ-like. How would you react to that?

Really? I dress the way I like, I like my African print and again, everyone can’t like every style or design. So, that’s acceptable.
