Quincy Jones Mocks Diddy

Quincy Jones is certainly one of the most influential producers of all time, having lent his midas touch to everyone from Ray Charles to Michael Jackson. As such, he's an authority on music and is entitled to give his opinion on the careers of others in the industry. And on Tuesday, he had Diddy on his mind.

In an interview with The Wrap at a Spotify launch event in Los Angeles (the streaming service was announcing artist-curated playlists), Jones said that the rapper and Bad Boy head honcho "couldn't recognize a b flat." Instead, Jones noted, "P. Diddy has a doctorate in marketing," citing his clothing labels and success with Ciroc (his vodka company) as the rapper's true talents.

Though Jones' comments might strike some as a welcome rebuke of Diddy's reputation as one of the most influential men in hip-hop, the situation is slightly more complicated. Though Diddy is probably not a fantastic musician, he has proven (time and time again) to have a great ear.

After all, this is the man that signed not only Faith Evans, 112, Cassie and Mario Winans, but also Biggie Smalls. (That said, it could be argued that his biggest musical achievement was stumbling upon and fostering Notorious B.I.G., which was decades ago).

It's true that Diddy seems hellbent on maxing out his business ventures, but that doesn't mean he always succeeds. He recently closed Justin, the Atlanta restaurant he named after his son. The New York outpost of Justin was also closed, in 1997. Justin Combs, of course, has been in the news lately for receiving a full-ride to play football at UCLA.

Many were shocked that the infamously cash-strapped school would offer a hefty scholarship to the son of a mogul, but others defended the decision, citing the fact that money that goes to the football program could not be allocated elsewhere. Some maintained that if Justin is qualified to earn a scholarship, his father's wealth should not prevent him from doing so.

Diddy and Cameron Diaz dating?

Diddy is rumoured to be dating newly single actress, and longtime friend, Cameron Diaz. According to eyewitnesses, during the Golden Globes after party, the rapper supposedly kept a tight leash on his new flame. Cassie and Kim Porter, move over!

One partygoer was startled, for instance, by Diddy’s “controlling” treatment of Diaz, with whom he’s recently been linked.

The insider says Diddy and Diaz did not seem to arrive together. Diddy apparently got there solo, says our source, and after being warmly swarmed by Paris, Nicky and Kathy Hilton and posing for photos with them, headed to an elevated back room in a tent pitched in the bar’s parking lot.

There, Diddy found Diaz sitting on a couch “talking to a guy,” says the source.

“Let’s go,” Diddy told the “Bad Teacher” actress, who our source says quickly got up to follow him out a back exit where celebrities could call their cars, away from the prying eyes of the paparazzi.

Before Diaz and Diddy could make their getaway, however, our source says they ran into three male party guests who wanted their pictures taken with Diaz.

She happily obliged, says our source, until an impatient Diddy grabbed her hand, said “Let’s go” again, and pulled her to a waiting car.

“I’ve never seen him so controlling,” says the source, who says Diaz “seemed to like the manly power thing.”

Diddy Hit With Lawsuit

Would Diddy's new Empress Sean John fragrance by any other name smell as sweet? If one cosmetics company gets its way, we may soon find out.

As Allhiphop.com reports, Empress Haircare Products has filed a lawsuit against the hip-hop mogul, claiming that his Sean John clothing company stole its name. According to the suit, Diddy's reps tried to trademark "Empress" last year, and when that failed, they offered to buy the rights.

When Empress refused to sell, Diddy's peeps reportedly tried to trademark the slightly different term "Empress Sean John." They were again turned down, but that didn't stop Sean John from releasing its Empress Sean John line of lotions and scents.

The case is now before the United States District Court, Southern District of New York, Allhiphop.com reports, and Empress Haircare Products is seeking damages that are triple the amount suffered -- and triple the profits Diddy has earned with the line.

Book fingers P.Diddy, Knight in Tupac and Biggie killings

A barrel-chested black man with a front tooth missing, relaxed, yet instinctively cautious, is seated across from four cops in a glass-walled Suge conference room at 8200, Wilshire Blvd.

This is not the first time a gangster has done business at this Beverly Hills office building. It once served as the bullet-riddled headquarters of the now-defunct Death Row Records, run by Bloods with a strict policy of never talking to cops.

But for Duane "Keffe D" Keith Davis, a shot caller for the Southside Crips, it’s now his lawyer's office. And on this surreal morning on Dec. 18, 2008, Keffe D is going to snitch. Keffe D tells the cops he was offered $1 million to kill Death Row rapper, Tupac Shakur and Suge Knight, the label's former CEO.

The informant tells his interrogators in plain language that Sean Combs — then known as Puff Daddy of Bad Boy Entertainment, Death Row Records' rival — commissioned Shakur's murder in Vegas in September 1996. (Knight would survive that night's shooting with a bullet wound to the head.)

Six months later, Bad Boy Entertainment rap star, Christopher Wallace, a.k.a Notorious B.I.G., was shot to death in L.A. In the decade and a half since the two most famous homicides in hip-hop history, police have made no arrests.

Now, in the pages of his self-published book, “Murder Rap”, set for release last Wednesday, former LAPD Detective, Greg Kading, reveals that LAPD has been sitting on extensive tapes and documents containing confessions from key players behind the assassinations of Shakur and Smalls. LAPD higher-ups pulled Kading off the double investigation right when he was poised to drive it home, he says.

Then they shut it down completely. An LAPD spokesman insists in an email that the case is still "active/ongoing," but that no further information is available. If true, this means the LAPD has only in the past couple of months revived the probe. Perhaps luckily for the rappers' families and fans still seeking closure, Kading made copies of nearly every investigative report and taped confession before he left LAPD.

His explosive book details the behind-the-scenes failure by LAPD to bring Shakur's and Smalls' killers to justice. In a taped confession fully reviewed by L.A. Weekly, Keffe D says, "Combs took me downstairs and he's like, 'man, I want to get rid of them dudes.' ... I was like, 'we'll wipe their ass out, quick. It's nothing.' ... We wanted a million.”

In another stunning confession, detailed in LAPD documents reviewed by the Weekly, the mother of one of Knight's children, identified in Kading's book as "Theresa Swann," breaks down in tears, stating that the former Death Row boss gave her the money to pay Wardell "Poochie" Fouse — Knight's close associate and a fellow member of the Mob Piru Bloods — to kill Smalls.

Keffe D is up against a wall at the time he fingers Combs for Shakur's murder. The federal and local agents gathered around him at the conference table, including Kading, have spent the last year cornering him as the kingpin of a nationwide PCP ring, and Keffe D is looking at 25 years to life if he doesn't reveal his secrets.

Sean Combs told the Weekly via email: "This story is pure fiction and completely ridiculous." Suge Knight could not be reached. In his confession, Keffe D takes the officers on a trip back to the night Shakur died. Keffe D places himself in the passenger seat of the old white Cadillac that famously pulled up, full of Crips, on the right side of the BMW carrying Shakur and Knight toward a club just off the Vegas Strip.

Sitting in the backseat of the Cadillac, according to Keffe D, was his nephew, Orlando "Baby Lane" Anderson, who got his ass kicked in the MGM Grand lobby earlier in the evening by Shakur's posse over a piece of Death Row bling that Baby Lane supposedly had stolen. Keffe D tells Kading on tape that his nephew "leaned over, and Orlando [Baby Lane] rolled down the window and popped him [Shakur]."

Keffe D gave the FBI a different story in 1997, denying his nephew was involved. Kading tells him on tape: "Everything in this report has to be right on, because if down the road it's determined that some of these details are incorrect, then everything's off the table." Keffe D responds, "Don't bullshit me, and I won't bullshit y'all.”

T.I in fresh drama involving Diddy, liquor, and gunshots

T.I. had to get on the mic and squash a fight at a BET Hip Hop Awards after-party two nights ago, that started because Sean "Diddy" Combs was upset Kenny Burns and his crew weren't drinking Ciroc, and now reports say shots were fired around the club afterwards.

Apparently, Diddy expects everyone to drink Ciroc vodka, and if you don't, you may get caught in his crossfire.

Down in Atlanta, after the BET Hip Hop Awards, Diddy was at an afterparty at Compound where he started popping off at Kenny Burns, who works with Ciroc's competitor Grey Goose, and a few dudes who were not drinking Ciroc.

According to reports, Diddy cursed everybody out from the mic and yelled fightin' words at Kenny, but before this could turn into an ugly situation, T.I., who is still on parole, got on the mic and put Diddy in check.

Rightfully so, T.I. told Diddy that he had too much money to be engaging in petty b.s. and that those fellas had the right to drink whatever vodka they wanted because they paid for it. He sealed the deal when he told Diddy, "They're not getting paid to drink (Ciroc)

Investigations show Kenny DOES get paid to drink Grey Goose, so why should he mess up his money because of Diddy's ego? Also, TIP let them know they won't be starting any drama to get him sent back to jail, but the film crew who taped the video said gunshots were fired inside the club after the beef went down. While other reports from folk who were there say shots were fired OUTSIDE the club. This is just ridiculous all around.
